People with chronic illness, including those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / ME often use healing movies as a form of comfort and inspiration.
As a person with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or #pwme you may
My name is Katherine Owen.
This page gathers a list of healing movies curated over the years.
They explore emotional recovery, trauma, illness, forgiveness, relationships, and the complexity of being human.
They are films that have
touched me, informed me, annoyed me, and provoked me to think differently. I found them worth watching.
If you relate to the topic, some of these movies might be quite heavy going for you. Please hear me say that your top choice for healing movies may be comedy and musicals. Laughing and singing are both profoundly healing.
The list of movies below is for when you need recognition, and the answer to questions such as:
I give the UK and US Amazon links to Prime Video.
My apologies that I can’t offer the same for those of you from other countries.
Of course many of these movies may not be available there but only on DVD.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
If you could wipe your mind clean of those things that have upset you, would you? A simple, elegant question — and the whole film explores it.
Bicentennial Man
This is a film about a robot who, from his arrival, proves to be capable of several human emotions along with creativity. It poses interesting questions about what it means to be human.
I remember reading The Empty Boat by Osho, which puts forward the idea that we might be so unattached to how we are treated that if someone insults us, we might have no need to respond — just as an empty boat does not get annoyed when another boat bumps into it.
The robot does not take offence, and can be mistreated without wanting revenge. He continues to be polite and of service. As the film goes on, he educates himself, spends time with loving people, and eventually wants freedom. He wants to experience human emotions. Ultimately, he finds it hard that those he loves leave him through death, and he chooses to die too.
One of the pitfalls of the spiritual healing journey, for me anyway, has been wanting to let go of the uncertainty of feelings. I found it moving to be faced with a character who willingly chooses to become emotional, and willingly chooses to wear out and die.
Getting ill when one is young can be traumatic for oneself and those around us. It can be difficult to find someone who can allow you to talk about the possibility of death. It might be helpful to watch a film where the character consciously chooses to die — not out of despair, but simply out of the choice to be as human as he can be.
Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood
Forgiveness of a parent. Also, how it is to be married to a woman who is hard work.
How to Make an American Quilt
Romantic relationships, break‑ups, and the lovable but immature man who isn’t ready to commit.
Faintheart
A quirky British comedy about a couple struggling to stay connected. Will she stay with him?
Postcards from the Edge
A semi‑autobiographical story by Carrie Fisher — mother–daughter complexity, humour, and survival.
Terms of Endearment
A rich mother–daughter story which is followed across many years. Aurora’s emotional manipulation (“dying forever”) is striking and recognisable.
Ride
“What do you want from a mother?” “I want her to be happy. I want to feel I don’t owe her anything.” A gentle, surprising film.
Ordinary People
Permission to see that a mother has not done right by you. Permission to survive when a sibling has died. Permission to exist.
Short Term 12
This film was rated five out of five, and as I started to watch it, I wondered if I would feel the same way. I didn’t hesitate at the end to give it five out of five myself.
It begins almost like a documentary, then deepens into a narrative about a young manager whose own story emerges as she helps a child in her care.
If you are ready to give yourself compassion and sympathy for something you have been through, get a box of tissues. If you want to forgive yourself, and work out a way to make amends to someone you have harmed, watch the film as a form of penance.
It’s truly wonderful.

The Secret Life of Bees
Healing movie about dealing with an abusive parent. Healing from feeling unloved, from being raised by others, from accidental harm. Healing from believing you bring trouble to those you love.
The Color Purple
Abuse, survival, and profound emotional courage.
Once Were Warriors
A powerful film about domestic abuse within a community. Violence is an open secret. No one intervenes.
If you’ve ever wondered whether speaking up or expressing anger would stop someone abusing you, this film shows how anger can fuel the abuser’s rage.
It is healing in its honesty.
The Fault in Our Stars
A film that begins after illness has already shaped a life. Hazel has lived with cancer for four years. There is no prognosis of recovery — only the question of how long her lungs will allow her to breathe.
It’s wonderful to have a film that looks at living life with illness, rather than at the possibility of recovering. Hazel’s frustration with her mother’s positivity is deeply relatable.
Hazel says she is a “grenade” waiting to explode — wanting to reduce casualties. The film allows us to feel anger and grief, and the acting is superb.
For myself, the youth of the character made me connect with my grief at having become so ill at the age of 23.
Iris
A portrait of illness, memory, and love. Iris gets Alzheimer’s disease.
The movie is a biographical drama about the writer Iris Murdoch, and life with her husband John Bayley
Shadowlands
Grief, love, and the courage to feel. C S Lewis faces the death of his wife.
Frida
Pain, creativity, and living with physical suffering.
Joni
An autobiographical film based on Joni Eareckson Tada’s life after the diving accident that left her quadriplegic. She plays the part of her older self.
A Christian heroince based on a true story. The challenges of cultivating faith for healing. A story of disability, and resilience.
My Left Foot
A powerful story of creativity and determination.
Children of a Lesser God
Communication, difference, and connection. A healing movie with a deaf heroine.
Born on the Fourth of July
Tom Cruise is superb dealing with trauma, disability, and disillusionment with the system he once fought for.
Regarding Henry
Memory loss, change, and rediscovering compassion. Also how a relationship copes when the husband becomes ill when the relationship was not doing well at the time.
Rain Man
The difference compassion makes when we see ourselves as connected.
Birdy
A healing movie which movingly explores trauma and mental illness - retreat into an inner world.
Manchester by the Sea
A beautiful, painful film. If you feel guilt or shame over something you’ve been part of, watch Lee. Would you want him to forgive himself?
I Am Not Your Guru (Tony Robbins documentary)
Tony Robbins, emotional breakthroughs, and human complexity.
The Boxer
A story of resilience and rebuilding.
Five Easy Pieces
A relationship where he treats her badly — and she stays. A fascinating look at imbalance and emotional dynamics. The deeper theme is emotional avoidance, alienation, and the inability to connect.
Jerry Maguire
A relationship of imbalance disguised as romance. Contains the famous line, “You had me at hello” — a line that reveals more than it intends.
Whiplash
A sharp look at motivation through cruelty versus motivation through praise. As one who has needed to push my body repeatedly past its limits, and lived with the consequences. I found it difficult to watch at times.
What Maisie knew
A beautiful central performance by the child who plays Maisie. She appears to cope with hearing arguments — until she is in the presence of gentle voices, and her nervous system visibly relaxes.
It is hopeful. It affirms that even if arguing is all she has known, she recognises the difference. She is still open to healing.
Flightplan
A powerful example of being told something you know is true… isn’t.
If you encounter disbelief of the illness you have, you may draw strength from this.
I did.
The Forgotten
Julianne Moore captures the raw ache of a mother whose reality is dismissed, mirroring the emotional isolation so many people feel when their suffering isn’t believed. Holding to one’s inner truth — even when others deny it — can be a fierce act of self‑preservation and reclamation.

The Bookshop (Emily Mortimer, Bill Nighy)
A female narcissist in a gentle‑looking village. Watch it if you’re inclined to say, “No one would be that vicious.”
Used People
A Jewish family, cutting humour, and a mother who is both difficult and strangely likeable - narcissists often are. A fascinating look at mother–daughter narcissism.
The Glass Castle
Watch it if you can’t understand why your mother stayed. Watch it if you’re puzzled by how charm and harm coexist.
I hope that one of the healing movies on this page serves you
Sometimes a story, a character, or a moment in a film can meet us where we are. Healing movies offer us a chance to know we are not alone in how we feel. There are moments when an easing of loneliness and a sense of connection with others can be the healing we most need.
People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or any chronic illness can be short of money. If you don’t want to buy these movies on DVD, or watch them on one of the movie streaming channels, you might be interested in a list of films that are free on Amazon UK without subscription to Prime. I live in Swindon, England, UK. Sadly, I’m not able to tell you the films of free on Amazon in the USA or any other country. It's possible there may be some overlap, so it's worth checking.
If you want to recommend a healing movie that has touched you, and leave a review for it, please feel free to do so in the healing forum. If I get more than one, I will transfer them to the bottom of this page.
