Discover free films on Amazon in the UK. No Prime subscription needed. These movies are easy to miss, so I’ve created a list to give you examples, and instructions to help you find more when these films are no longer available.
You will need a free Amazon account.

Look for the films without a yellow padlock
You are on the website of someone who lives with chronic illness. Many of us in this situation don’t have the money for subscriptions so I thought knowing about the free films on Amazon UK might be of help.
Amazon Prime is a paid for service. The movies included in the subscription are shown by a yellow padlock sign.
Some people don’t even know that you can get free films on Amazon. They have no yellow padlock on the thumbnail. These are free to watch. The downside is that they include ads.
I subscribe to Prime a few times a year and watch those films. At other times, I watch the free ones.
Personally I don’t experience the difference in quality
between the films that come with a subscription to Amazon Prime, and films that are
free on Prime.
The free films on Amazon include Oscar winners and films that have a lot of good reviews.
My recommended free films on Amazon UK... so far
Out of the ones I’ve watched so far, my recommended free films on Amazon UK are as follows.
Precious.
A hard-hitting drama about a particularly grim childhood experienced
by an African American teenager. Brilliant acting by the lead. Heart-warming communication of how the human spirit can survive so much.
Trigger warning: sexual abuse and family
violence.
Time after time.
I genuinely laughed out loud at
times in this film. Playful and delightful. Thoughtful too. Interesting that it's review score is low.
Vita and Virginia.
As a writer, I’m interested in
Virginia Woolf, so this added interest for me. Beautifully acted. Beautifully
evocative of the period of time in which it is set. I enjoyed the book Orlando,
and had no idea it was based on a real person. As a by-product I found it
interesting to see how – at a time when homosexuality was illegal in the UK–
people found ways to work around those societal norms.
List of Free films on Amazon UK
This list was made originally for me. I decided to share it because I couldn’t find it anywhere online. (I underestimated the work involved! ) This means the list is skewed towards my tastes. I don’t watch horror. And try to avoid extreme violence. They may have snuck into the list, but they are not here deliberately.
It's also possible some of the films may not be free. A movie that is free on prime one day, may be put within the subscription the next. By the way, the opposite is also true. If you spot a film on subscription that you like, it’s worth adding it to your watchlist– it may become free at some point.
The free films below are listed in order of IMDb review from highest to lowest. And after that by alphabet.
There may be errors. I put the list of free films into a ChatBot to add the IMDb review and the genre. Sometimes the title matches another movie and it goes with that one instead. I might not have caught all of the mistakes. So please check it's the film you want to watch, before you do!

How to find free films on Amazon UK
Amazon Prime gives you access to the “Included with Prime” library. You pay a monthly subscription which allows you to watch all their films.
This is their main offering and income, so the option to subscribe is the easiest option to find.
When I first go onto Amazon prime on my television, it invites me to sign up to the monthly subscription. But In small letters at the bottom of the page I can click an option along the lines of “no thank you” or “back”.
This takes me to a screen where I can select which films I want to watch.
Very few movies showing at this point are likely to be free.
They will show various categories of movie such as
- movies which are trending,
- movies we think you’ll like (if you’ve already been subscribed to prime in the past)
- movies in a specific genre eg. action, horror, romantic comedy.
If you're looking at Amazon Prime on a computer, searching is easier and you can search for one of the following.
- “movies for free”
- "movies free with ads"
It will still show mostly films that only become free once you have paid for a subscription!
Find one or two films are without a padlock, click and add them to your watchlist.
You then have two options.
Once you click through on a free film, you will see underneath it, “customers also watched”.
Some of those movies are likely to be free. You might find ones that appeal to you more.
When you have selected enough free films on Amazon, next time you go into Amazon Prime, you may find that you're offered a whole row of “movies – free with ads”.
These are the free films.
Once you’ve chosen a number of free films you like, you can delete from your watchlist those that don’t appeal to you. This way you’re more likely to be shown films in line with the genre and style you like.
Other free films in the UK
Remember in the UK, you can also get free films on the streaming channels for Channel 4, ITV, and Channel 5.
Avoid subscribing to Amazon Prime by accident
Many people have their bank card stored on Amazon, so it is quite easy to subscribe to Prime by mistake. I’m not sure how strict they are in making it clear that you have subscribed. To avoid subscribing, the best thing is not to click on any films with a little yellow padlock on the image which advertises the film.
Are the movies you can buy or rent cheaper when subscribed to Prime?
No. If you want to buy or rent a movie on Amazon Prime, there’s no disadvantage for NOT having Amazon Prime. They charge you the same amount to rent or buy the film whether you’re subscribed or not.
Does a Prime subscription allow you to watch the free films without adverts?
No, it doesn't. But sometimes a film is available both as Free with ads and on Amazon Prime subscription. In that case, with the subscription you would be spared the ads.
